My Favourite Winter Layering Tip

July 7, 2015

Over the years I’ve worked on culling what I own and maximising what I keep. I like looking at what I’m wearing each day and noticing a mix of items from five years ago, ethical pieces and new pieces. Part of wanting to live with less and using more of what I have means that I’ve had to really nail layering (and of course partly due to the fact that it’s freezing in Dunedin). I struggle to keep warm so how I’ve found myself in some of the coldest cities in various countries still amuses me. A few years ago my friend Marlene from Chocolate, Cookies and Candies mentioned a tip that I’ve used almost every single day during winter. Her tip was to layer your leather jacket under your coat. It’s genius. The leather keeps the heat in and acts as a nice wind breaker.

This summer I added this versatile jacket to my wardrobe and managed to use it across seasons by simply layering it, first under my light trench and as it got colder under a heavier coat. It makes a world of a difference. If you’ve got a leather jacket hanging in your closet you might want to try this to get a little more wear out of it. And if you don’t, I think the Leina Broughton biker jacket might be worth the investment.

Recreate the outfit | Coat casual belted coat ($100), grey coat ($110, on my list) | Biker Jacket ($190) | Stripe top ($15-$30) |  Black textured leggings ($60) | Wedges elastic strap wedges ($72), minimalist wedge ($65) | Textured clutch ($70)

Do you have any favourite winter layering tips? I’d love to know.
You can also see the variety of other ways I’ve styled the leather jacket here.
