My Unstyled Life: Little corners of calm

Clear surfaces. That is my best tip. Keeping as much of our surfaces clear of clutter as possible makes it so much easier to have a space for living and doing – and taking photos. It was the one thing that really helped my mood after having Rafa. We came home from the hospital, I was in pain, overwhelmed and emotional. Thankfully our kitchen counter was always clear, the dining table was visible, there wasn’t baby paraphernalia all over the place. I would look up from the sofa  (exhausted as ever with a newborn in my arms) and the environment was tranquil. My surfaces aren’t completed devoid of stuff, there are a few pieces on them based on usefulness or beauty, if I’m lucky – both. How to keep them this way – I put things away in their rightful place as I go and I return other people’s things (ie Patrick’s and Rafa’s) to their rightful places. Everything has a place and everything in its place. If you’re trying to tidy or organise your home, I think the surfaces are a good place to start and to get into the habit of maintaining.
