A Flat Obsession

July 20, 2015

I don’t have too many pairs of flat shoes, owing mostly to my vertically challenged reality. I have a pair each of: ballet flats (in red), oxfords (brown), animal print loafers, and monk shoes (black). And that’s it. My favourite sandals recently gave out and I’m now on the market for another pair of flats. But like clothes and accessories I don’t leave shopping for my wardrobe to chance. It’s all methodically planned out and budgeted for. I’m probably, realistically, not going to be purchasing flats until we’ve seen the back of this cold weather but in the meantime I’m narrowing down what’s caught my eye, working out a savings plan for it and really thinking about what would work best with my style, existing wardrobe and lifestyle.

I’m currently drawn to texture and different shapes, here’s what I’m choosing from:

1. Babouche Slides in Cream $62 | I love this shape and that I don’t currently own anything like this

2. Mar Wrapped Flat in Beige $135 | The knotted detail on this has really caught my attention, it would make a striking (but simple) contrast to the way I dress (often all black and structured with clean lines)

3. Shae Buckle Shoe in Tan $169 | I saw a similar men’s pair online a few days ago and sent the link to Patrick as a suggestion of something he might like, when I came across this women’s pair I almost caved in and bought it. I recently did a colour analysis which suggested browns were the best colour for shoes and handbags for me. Interesting. I haven’t been too excited about the colour generally but this pair is definitely making me stop and think.

4. Jemima II $183 | These shoes are an example of my natural tendency to gravitate towards the familiar but with a point of difference. In this case, it’s the metallic toe cap.

but what I should really be doing is saving my money for these…

5. Rockstud Cage Flats $975 | While I’ve given into rational thought and prioritised travel, insurance, buying land, building a home (all that stuff) over buying these shoes I still haven’t been able to cross them off the list.

What do you look for when purchasing flat shoes?
