Afa Ah Loo Debut Collection At Fiji Fashion Week A Success

May 29, 2015

Fourteen designers showcased their resort collections tonight at the first show for Fiji Fashion Week. It’s already been a long night but I didn’t want to turn in before sharing with you the highlights from my favourite collection. Ladies and gentleman, the one designer that stood out for me and whose collection I remember most vividly is Afa Ah Loo. Afa presented his Amioga Samoa collection – I’ll leave you with some images and a copy of my review.

The Amioga Samoa collection from Fiji Fashion Week 2015 debut designer Afa Ah Loo brought fun, movement and controlled colours to the runway. Even I, with my almost innate aversion to colour was drawn to Afa’s use of colour in his structured garments. Here’s a designer who understands that Pacific print doesn’t necessarily mean flowers. Afa had abstract prints and geometric shapes easily layered with florals. The tailoring was impressive with neat panels and soft flowing hems. Afa understands how to draw inspiration (from a vintage monochrome photo of his mother taken in New Zealand in the late 60’s) and create a collection injected with personality and freshness. The garments carry a hint of vintage glamour with striking contemporary silhouettes. The Amioga Samoa collection boasts a versatility that appears somewhat lacking in the other shows tonight. Here’s a resort wear collection that will take you from day to night and beach to formal dining with ease as well as catering easily to varying body sizes and personal preferences. I truly appreciated seeing a Pacific resort collection that wasn’t filled with floral prints and explosions of colour but retained a Pacific flare instead through the clever use of colour. I feel this is reflective of Afa’s ability to remain true to his Pacific heritage while understanding the global trends and the global consumer. Afa Ah Loo has changed my perception of Pacific print and colour for the better – a feat that no other designer has been able to achieve in 28 years. This is one designer who undoubtedly has this bloggers seal of approval. – Vanisha for Fiji Fashion Week 2015

Congratulations Afa on a beautiful, wearable and artistic collection x
